Glide past ancient rainforests as you sip Tasmanian wine and sample fine local cheeses on a Gordon River Cruise from Strahan. With a choice of seating on either a morning or afternoon departure, your six-hour cruise on the Gordon River allows plenty of time to explore Strahan and surrounding area, the gateway to Tasmania’s World Heritage Area.

Come aboard the fastest, smoothest, most comfortable cruise boat on Tasmania’s West Coast, Lady Jane Franklin II, to journey deep into a land lost in time. Your cruise begins in the waterfront village of Strahan, heads towards the open sea at the spectacular Hell’s Gate, then crosses Macquarie Harbour to the calm lower reaches of the mighty Gordon River. In the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, marvel at the riverside rainforest, perfectly reflected in the river’s waters, then take a walk into the timeless green of the forest at Heritage Landing.

At Hell’s Gate, you’ll feel the power of the sea and understand why mariners gave the place its name.

On Sarah Island, hear an enthralling actor tell stories of the days when convicts labored to cut logs of Huon Pine, to craft the timber into sturdy ships. The cruise ends with an early afternoon return to Strahan, in plenty of time to discover more about the town and its surroundings. Browse through the Wild Rivers Store and the Thylacine and Endangered Species Center.

Your seating options include:

Atrium Seating – All forward seating, spacious seating with a number of styles to choose from. Includes Buffet lunch and all day tea and coffee.

Window Recliner – All forward seating with full length windows for exceptional views. Includes Buffet lunch and all day tea and coffee

Captain’s Premier Upper Deck – Luxury seating and exclusive deck space plus your own dedicated nature guide/steward. Includes fine food, wine and local Tasmanian beer. Gourmet lunch will consist of smoked salmon, ocean trout, Tasmanian game meat and a selection of Tasmanian produce including local cheeses.

Duration

5.5 – 6 hours

Location

Strahan, Australia

Discover one of the world’s great railway journeys! Now, after 40 years, the West Coast Wilderness Railway in Tasmania is running again. You’re able to travel through one of the world’s last pristine wilderness areas crossing 40 bridges, wild rivers, and climb over 200 meters on a fascinating journey between Queenstown and Strahan. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit an old gold mining settlement, explore the mine by candlelight and pan for gold in the river.

The historic 35 kilometer railway of tight curves and spectacular bridges clambers through rugged wilderness, dense rainforest and steep gorges, a legacy to the engineering skills, determination and endurance of the early 19th century West Coast pioneers who built it. Since 1896, the railway has hauled copper concentrates from the Queenstown mines to the port of Strahan, providing the only access and lifeline for the communities along the way.

Join the train seated in Tourist or Premier cars that feature natural Tasmanian timbers. The train will meet at Dubbil Barril where Fettlers lunches or afternoon teas are available from the train, or why not try ‘Dotties’ coffee shop in Queenstown for a fine selection of light refreshments, before or after your journey.

Options:

Tourist Carriage - One way Tourist class rail journey with coach transfers back to Strahan or Queenstown. Includes a packed lunch.

Premier Carriage – One way Premier class rail journey with coach transfers back to Strahan or Queenstown. Includes gourmet lunch, snacks, wine and beer, dedicated guide/steward plus a souvenir guide book.

Secluded bays, white sand beaches and sheer granite cliffs. This is the picturesque Freycinet National Park. Spend three days exploring this scenic part of Tasmania. Overnight in cabins on the edge of the park. This is what the Tasmanian experience is all about.

On this three day walk, you explore the Freycinet National Park on the East Coast of Tasmania and the Douglas Apsley National Park nearby. Carrying only a day pack, you will explore these spectacular National Parks. In season there are many wildflowers and wildlife abounds. Each night will be spent at simple but comfortable cabins in the village of Coles Bay, on the edge of the Freycinet National Park.

3-Day Freycinet Trek includes 2 nights accommodation in cabins, Goretex rain jacket and waterproof overpants, sleeping bag with inner sheet, National Park fees, all meals, bus transfers and secure storage for excess luggage.

Day 1: Launceston / Douglas Apsley National Park / Coles Bay (L, D)

Meet at 8:30am for gear check and briefing. A scenic drive east from Launceston takes you to the Douglas Apsley National Park, where you walk the Apsley Gorge circuit, a picturesque walk featuring Oyster Bay Pines, sheer cliffs and a tranquil rock pool fed by miniature waterfalls. This park is the largest area of undisturbed dry sclerophyll forest remaining in Tasmania. You overnight in cabins in the village of Coles Bay.

Overnight Accommodation: Cabins

Day 2: Coles Bay / Freycinet National Park / Coles Bay (B, L, D)

Visit Freycinet National Park for a full day walk, discovering the secluded bays, white sand beaches and sheer granite cliffs on your walk to Wineglass Bay. You have the opportunity to see many bird and mammal species, such as the Bennetts wallaby, Tasmanian Pademelon, wombat, black cockatoo, swift parrot and green rosella. After lunch you continue your circuit walk via the Isthmus Track to Hazards Beach and Lemana Lookout, a small rocky headland with great southerly views of the Peninsula and Schouten Island. Tonight you overnight again at Coles Bay.

Overnight Accommodation: Cabins

Day 3: Coles Bay / Launceston (B, L)

Today you have the opportunity to walk toward the summit of Mt Amos for panoramic views of mountain and coast. This is a rugged walk and most of the ascent route is on bare rock. An alternative walk is to explore the remote and often deserted Friendly Beaches, including a visit to Saltwater Lagoon where large numbers of black swans and other waterfowl can be seen. After lunch, you return to Launceston via Campbelltown, arriving at approximately 5:00pm.
